Still Running

I went for my longest run in a loooooooong time, with regard to both duration and distance. I covered 5.3 miles in 1 hour and 1 minute, according to my official timepiece (the clock on the wall). I realy would like to get a heart rate monitor and watch.

It was chilly this morning, but the wind wasn't blowing and it actually wasn't bad. I wore my PI AmFib gloves and they were way too warm. My hands were sweating at the end of the first mile, so I just took them off and carried them after that. I thought it was going to be more of a hassle than it was. I wore the t-shirt, I slept in (cotton is NOT a good choice for this kind of run. It holds all of your sweat, and holds it close to the body. It wasn't bad on the run, but the cool-down was a little chilly) and two long sleeved workout shirts. On top of that, I threw on my shell (a rough term for the wind-breaker-like jacket I wear that neither breaks the wind nor provides a shell; God bless my wife: this is my Christmas gift this year) on top of that.

I also wore my fleece headband instead of a hat...maybe next time I'll wear the wicking one. Overall, the temperature of The Running Fish was just about right. I'm still getting used to regulating this, so it's like a minor miracle when I get it right.

It's really cool to be building a base, and I want to start experimenting with some interval and speed work. I also added some stretches at the end of the run and then went for a walk with my daughter and my dog as I cooled down.

We watched the steam rising off my body as we walked...

Good job on the run. I was in Lancaster PA over Thanksgiving and ran every day. All I can say was that each run was a nice hill workout. Question : are there any flat areas in Pennsylvania?

I'm in New York and ran in similar weather today. I've found that for the weather getting colder, and me being a warm-bodied person, I've had great luck with running with an Under Armor(sp?) or a Nike full length shirt and depending on the weather, a short or long sleeve shirt over that. Today I did an extended run for my marathon training with only an undershit (skin or whatever they call it) and a long sleeve Nike running shirt (wicking shirt). I left the gloves and ear wrap at home and was a little cold at times, but overall just about perfect.

Besides, all the cold does is motivate me to run faster... :-)

Lancaster is some beautiful running/cycling.

To answer your question: NO. There are no flat areas in Penbnsylvania. Additionally, I was saying to my daughter that people who live in Pennsylvania can survive just about anywhere.
"Why?" she asked.
I explained about the extremes of temperature here, and how vast those extremes are (single digit winters and 100+ summers...with humidity).

I hear you on the Under Armour. I'll give it a whirl and see how it works. You also wrote:

You might want to check the spelling on that last word (HA!). Unless, of course, you're preparing for that crisis moment of the marathon, where you have to make a decision as to whether it's worth it to stop or not...[Insert shocked face emoticon].

Yeah, I caught the typo afterwards. (I blame it on the sodium loss after 18 miles) Sorry about that, didn't mean to splash a word like that across your blog.

As for stopping by, I've been secretly checking you out. (well, your blog anyway). I've been fascinated with your progress, including how you managed to so far this year beat both the Big C and a Pick-up truck. BTW : also loved your post about your Triathalon and the change in perspective it brought upon stopping at the grocery store on the way home.

Thanks for being an inspiration! And I done got myself 3 more pairs of my good running shoes! :-)
